It is now possible to apply as mentors and as students, please do so.
http://code.google.com/soc/
Seth have already said that he would like to be a mentor, but depending on the number of student applications, more mentors will be needed. I will be happy to help any mentors that will apply.
I will myself only be able to mentor a few projects, but please send in student applications and I will do my best to make sure that all student projects succeed.

The first student application has already been submitted to GSoC.
I will wait a while before I answer any applications, to allow for all student to submit their application, but of course sooner is better
Please feel free to send you applications.
If you have any questions about applications, please submit them to this forum.

hi everyone, i'm aplying for the summer of code and i'll appreciate if someone can comment this idea so i can improve it. thnx a lot.
----------------
Project: Fast Self-Organizing Maps (support for SOM)
Due to Kohonen’s Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) are one of the most used techniques for clustering, and quite popular among the artificial neural network community, having an open source library which allow the fast implementation of these neural networks would make things simpler for both practical and scientific goals.
Self-Organizing Maps have been used in such applications as automatic speech recognition, voice analysis, image classification, signal analysis, document organization and retrieval (WEBSOM).
The main project idea is to implement support for SOM networks and an extensible framework for an easy implementation of representative variations of the original model (e.g. constructive SOM networks). Additionally, implementation of Access Methods would be added to the network training in order to greatly accelerate this process. Access Methods build searching trees to solve specific queries like nearest neighbor or range queries in an efficient way. Since these searching trees can be constructed using the units of a SOM, incorporation of Access Methods will lead to a faster network training.

Hi Carlos,
Self-Organizing Maps would be very nice to have included during this GSoC, and you application is OK, I have however received several applications for SOMs, so in order for your application to stand out, I will need to know the following.
- What is the deliverables of the project and what is the time schedule for these deliverables?
- What changes do you expect to make to the external functions and enumerations of the FANN library?
- How will you document these changes?
- How will a novice user know if each algorithm is appropriate to be used for their problem?
Best Regards,
Steffen

Hello, I found this library a few days ago but it seems handy for my purposes. I'm starting with my master thesis which is about implementing some self-organizing models of neural nets (temporal kohonen map, recursive som, MSOM,..) used for representing sequences and modifying of these models to be able to process structured data(trees) ( http://matfyz.net/~junckritter/diplomovka/hammer.rec-self-org.neurcomp04.pdf). So it'd be good to include this code to FANN and Summer of Code sounds like a big motivation for doing it. But I'm thinking about the form of doing it, because obviously some other people want to code something with self-organization. So my question is: could this be helpful for you? And how could be handled the fact that apparently more people need a similar code for self-organizing as a basis which is not implemented yet? If you need some additional info, I can provide it (if I know it:)). Good night. Tomas

I only plan to accept one application for kohonen maps, and the plan is that all development on this will be posted to this forum, and if nessecary some kind of CVS access will be set up.
So anyone interrested in participating in this development is more than welcome.

You should indicate other open source organizations than working with neural networks and artificial intelligence?
Thank you
